IOC: Now is not the time to lift sanctions against Russians and Belarusians

Athletes from aggressor countries are not allowed to qualify for the Games in Paris

Press Secretary of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Mark Adams On the first day of the IOC Executive Board meeting, it stated that sanctions against athletes from Russia and Belarus would remain in place. The Committee does not intend to remove them during the qualifying competitions for Olympic Games 2024 in Paris.

“Now is not the time to lift sanctions from Russians or Belarusians. The sanctions remain in place,” the spokesman said.

“There are some speculations [относительно того, когда санкции могут быть сняты]… but at the moment there are many factors. The Games are still far away. True, qualifications will come soon.

We have to see how things go. The situation there is changing rapidly, often changing daily. The sanctions are still in place. I would not like to comment on the state of qualification of the athletes for Paris.”

Earlier, IOC President Thomas Bach supported the extension of international sanctions against Russian and Belarusian athletes. Bach noted that the responsibility for unleashing the war lies with the Russian and Belarusian governments.

The full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine continues for the 286th day.
