Olga Brusnikina said she would hand over the post of President of the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation to Tatyana Pokrovskaya if she takes part in the elections.
Brusnikina, who previously served as first vice-president of the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation, won the election for the head of the federation on Tuesday. The candidacy of Russian national team head coach Pokrovskaya was not put forward in the vote.
– Thank you for your congratulations. Everything went well. I don’t know how we expected him to be chosen. If Tatyana Nikolaevna Pokrovskaya had left her candidacy, then, of course, I would have given her this role. She is a respected person, everyone knows her. Tatyana Nikolaevna means a lot to our sport, she is one of the brightest faces in our federation. When she decided to withdraw, there was only one candidate left, we couldn’t help but hold a conference.
I did not know what decision Tatyana Nikolaevna would make. Therefore, until the last, it was unclear who would become president.
It was an extraordinary conference on reporting and elections. We had to realize this, because a lot of work is currently underway to digitize our industry by order of the government and the Ministry of Sports. To do this, it is necessary to carry out certain registration procedures for the federation in the electronic systems concerned. This requires the presence of the president (organization). Our elected president being unable to exercise his functions, on November 2, the presidium of the federation decided to hold an extraordinary conference. We have no right to let down the Ministry of Sports and the government. We must follow the tasks set by the leadership of the country,” Brusnikina told reporters.
She also shared what her first steps will be in a new position.
This work is not new to me. For 12 years I was vice-president, so I know the work of the federation well, in which direction it should go, I know the problems and the tasks. Our main task today is to maintain a high level of training of our athletes, to maintain the most favorable conditions for our team, so that during the international suspension, coaches and athletes can remain motivated. All this is necessary to be on the alert and break into the sports world,” Brusnikina said.
In October, five-time Olympic champion Anastasia Davydova left the presidium of the federation.
– After the modifications of the charter of the federation, we no longer have a presidium, but an executive committee. There are currently no vacancies in this one. We granted the exit request of those who requested it,” Brusnikina said.
