Tyson says Ukrainian’s body is ‘tired’ after long amateur career
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury commented on a possible fight with the holder of the WBA / WBO / IBF / IBO titles Oleksandr Usyk.
“In fact, Usyk is older than me, he is about 35, I am 34. So this is an equal fight. If he was 22, things might be different, but he’s an old man. He had 300 amateur fights, he was also tired.
“He has about 250,000 miles on his watch. He had 315 amateur fights or so and he had about 20 professional fights. I don’t believe he has the best footwork in boxing, nor do I believe he’s ahead of me in speed.”
“Hopefully we will see the most important year of my career. 2023 is going to be the big fights that the fans are craving. First of all, we are talking about Usyk. I’m ready, I want to fight Usyk, whether it’s in Saudi Arabia or here in the UK.”
“And let’s give the fans one champion, one name, one face. Usyk is ready to take on the challenge. He came to my fight with Chisora, so it’s fair game with him. He is not easy to understand, he is a nimble left-hander with very good skills, an Olympic champion. And he’s getting into good shape, so I’m really looking forward to this challenge.”
In early December, Fury defeated Derek Chisora ahead of schedule and retained the WBC world heavyweight title. After the fight, Fury called Usyk to the ring, where the boxers had a duel of views.
Usyk’s manager, Egis Klimas, said that negotiations for a fight for the title of undisputed heavyweight champion of the world are nearing completion. The Usyk-Fury fight could take place in February or early March next year.
