IOC upholds sanctions against Russia and Belarus

The Olympic Committee also expressed solidarity with Ukrainian athletes

International Olympic Committee (IOC) upheld sanctions against Russia and Belarus. The decision was made at the 11th Olympic Summit.

During the discussions, issues of mitigation of sanctions and the admission of Russian athletes to international competitions were raised. Members of the IOC opposed the policy of individual states to personally decide on the participation of Russians and Belarusians, calling it interference in the activities of sports organizations.

In addition to extending sanctions, IOC members expressed support for Ukrainian athletes. The Committee set a goal to help Ukrainians prepare for the biggest competitions in wartime conditions.

Earlier, spokesman (IOC) Mark Adams said that the time had not yet come to lift sanctions against Russians and Belarusians. IOC President Thomas Bach also supported their extension, noting that the Russian and Belarusian governments are responsible for starting the war.

The full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine continues for the 289th day.
