The representative of Ukraine raised at the extraordinary congress of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) the issue of the withdrawal of Russians and Belarusians from the departures for 2023, as well as the withdrawal of officials from work in the federation.
The Russians have been suspended from competitions under the auspices of FINA due to the situation in Ukraine.
The representative of Ukraine at the congress stressed that Ukrainian athletes cannot prepare for competitions under the current conditions and participate in competitions.
“At the same time, many Russian athletes are employed in military structures that support aggression,” she added.
“We support Ukrainian athletes, especially in the preparation for the Olympics, we cooperate in this with your Olympic committee, with the IOC. FINA issued sanctions against officials, representatives of Russian leaders, and sanctions were also adopted against the flag and symbols. For athletes, FINA is part of the Olympic family. The Olympic summit, which took place recently, did not decide on their participation. But sport must be neutral and free. The decision on the participation of Russians in the Olympics will be taken by the whole Olympic movement, but this decision has not been taken yet,” said FINA President Hussein Al Musallam.
