Among the men, skier Alexander Bolshunov won, who managed to bypass chess player Jan Nepomniachtchi and swimmer Kliment Kolesnikov according to the voting results.
— I would like to thank those who gave me this award. It’s a great reward. To be an athlete of the year in Russia means in the world, because the best athletes are in our country, Bolshunov said.
On the women’s side, victory went to figure skater Anna Shcherbakova, who won the Beijing Olympics in February. In the vote, student Eteri Tutberidze left behind skier Natalya Nepryaeva and the Olympic champion by shooting Vitalina Batsarashkina.
