“We have no choice but to leave Europe in terms of sport and become part of the fastest growing part of the world – Asia” – Veronika Stepanova

Olympic cross-country skiing champion Veronika Stepanova in a column on , she said that in the years to come, the best conditions in the world for professional sport could be created in the Asian region.

Russian skiers are currently suspended from participating in international competitions. Earlier, US Olympic Committee President Suzanne Lyons said the Russians should be returned to the world stage somehow.

“Now we have no choice but to leave Europe. In sporting terms. And be part of the fastest growing part of the world – Asia. Yes, specifically in cross-country skiing there “Down, we don’t have anyone to compete with right now. But I’m sure that even in five years, everything can be changed if you put in the work wisely.”

If in Asia they make the best cars and phones in the world, build the best roads and hotels, what’s stopping them from creating the best world conditions for professional sports in a few years? In a few years, will we consider Chusovoy or Changchun as world centers of skiing, and not Lillehammer or Falun? Why not?

In Chusovoy, I already see a fairly European-class ski stadium (okay, the slope profile still has to be complicated!), excellent skiing weather and real interest from both local authorities and locals. And the road from the airport is at least as good as from Oslo to Lillehammer. Which impressed me personally.

You just need to invest a certain amount of money: for example, creating conditions for television is much cheaper than building such roads. I believe in Chusovoy and Changchun much more than in Lillehammer,” Stepanova wrote.

Stepanova, 21, won gold in the relay at the Beijing Olympics.
