Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev called the well-deserved nomination of the Olympic champion of the Olympic Games 2022 Anna Shcherbakova for the ISU Skating Awards in the Most Valuable Skater category.
– Let’s hope this is the first step towards the return of Russian figure skaters to the world stage. But this summer, the ISU got into a scandal when it removed Shcherbakova’s photo from the congratulations on International Olympic Day. Then they faced a wave of criticism and, apparently, realized they didn’t need to do it anymore. Our skaters set the tone in this sport, without them it is simply impossible.
Anna Shcherbakova is the world leader in figure skating, she rightly deserves to be nominated for this award, and our other athletes deserve it too. We expect common sense from the leadership of the ISU and the adoption of new correct decisions. Otherwise, they will face a huge drop in ratings,” Svishchev told reporters.
The award ceremony will take place on February 5, 2023. At the Beijing Olympics, 18-year-old Shcherbakova won gold in individual skating.
