Shevchenko believes in the strength of the Ukrainian people
Legendary Ukrainian footballer and former head coach of the national football team Andrey Shevchenko spoke about the incredible fortitude of the Ukrainian people.
“The spirit of Ukrainians is incredible, even in such a difficult situation. People cooperate and help each other. I think that in Ukraine there is a force, an indestructible mind. We don’t have a choice.”
“For us, the last choice is to simply surrender, and then it’s all over for Ukraine. We have a very clear goal – we are fighting for our land, for our future, and this shows us as a truly united people.”
“Last month I was very close to the target of one of the Russian missile strikes. [Находился] about 2 km from impact. One of the central electrical generators [был поражен], as we all know, the Russians are trying to strike at critical infrastructure. The sensation of the explosion was very strong.”
“When I arrive in a war zone, I know that [обстрел] may happen. It’s an incredible feeling when you go there. People suffer, but they are very united. We know what we must do, we know how to survive, we know we must be together.”
In June, Andriy Shevchenko, together with 1 + 1 media, launched the Sports Front project, designed to draw the attention of the international sports community to the war in Ukraine.
In May, Shevchenko became the first ambassador of the UNITED24 presidential initiative, which is designed to help Ukraine fight the Russian invasion. He also takes part in charity matches and projects to raise funds to help his native country.
The ex-coach of the Ukrainian national team joined the Tribune of Heroes charity foundation in October and met with the families of Ukrainian ultras. Shevchenko transferred 400 thousand hryvnias to the organization.
Early on the morning of February 24, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia has been going on for 296 days.
