Representative of Lithuania Ruta Meilutite broke the world record in the 50m breaststroke at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Melbourne.
The sportswoman showed the result of 28.37 seconds. She surpassed the feat of Jamaican Alia Atkinson, who covered the distance in 28.56 seconds in 2018.
Second in swimming was Lilly King of the United States (28.86), third place went to Lara van Niekerk of South Africa (29.27).
The Australian women’s team also set a new world record in the 4x50m medley relay. Australians Molly O’Callaghan, Chelsea Hodges, Emma McKeon and Madison Wilson clocked 1 minute 42.35 seconds. The last record was set by American swimmers in 2018 – 1:42.38.
Team USA finished second in the relay at 1:42.41 and the Swedes came third at 1:42.43.
The Italian men’s team broke the world record in the 4x50m medley relay. Italian swimmers Lorenzo Mora, Nicolo Martinenghi, Matteo Rivolta and Leonardo Deplano clocked 1 minute 29.72 seconds. The last record was also set by the Italians in 2021 – 1:30.14.
The Americans took second place in the relay (1:30.37) and the Australians third (1:30.81).
