Canada’s McNeil sets world record in 50m backstroke at World Championships in Melbourne

Olympic champion of the Tokyo Olympics, Canadian swimmer Margaret McNeil set a new world record in the 50m backstroke at the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne.

McNeil swam the distance in 25.25 seconds. Thus, she broke her own record set in December 2021 (25.27).

Claire Kurtzan of the United States was second at 25.54 and Australia’s Molly O’Callaghan took bronze at 25.61.

The world championship in Melbourne will last until December 18.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) in March suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
