“We are very happy that Petr Ivanov has returned to lead the VFLA” – Matytsin

Minister of Sports of the Russian Federationdeposit Matytsin said he was happy that the CAS sanctions against the Russians were over, as well as the return of Petr Ivanov as president of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (VFLA).

Since December 17, 2022, the restrictions imposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on the awarding of leadership positions in international sports organizations by Russian officials have been officially lifted, as confirmed by a letter from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Matytsin earlier on Sunday announced the return of Peter Ivanov as head of the VFLA.

– Officially, the CAS sanctions that were imposed on Russian sports, officials, were completed yesterday, of course, we are very happy that Petr Valerievich has returned to the leadership of ARAF, and all our colleagues from the Federation of Russia may continue to work in public organizations, WADA officially notifies all signatories of the WADA Code. The Ministry of Sports is optimistic that the work of our colleagues will continue, it has enormous potential, I see the need to use the knowledge and experience of the people who work today in government structures and actively participate activities of public bodies.

I did not leave my position anywhere, yesterday I informed my colleagues of the Executive Committee of FISU by sending a letter to the Executive Committee that I temporarily entrust the authority to the First Vice-President of FISU, which is determined by the charter of the organization. But at the same time, I can come back at any time, whenever I deem it necessary, to fulfill the functions of President, I have no restrictions on the participation in FISU events. Naturally, I actively participate in the work, I am informed about what is happening, I continue contacts with my colleagues, I actively participate in dialogue with them,” Matytsin told reporters.

ARAF has been stripped of its World Athletics membership since 2015 due to a massive doping scandal. From then on, Russian athletes could participate in international competitions only after obtaining neutral status. On March 1, 2022, World Athletics banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions.
