Russian figure skating coach Inna Goncharenko told Metaratings.ru why Russian male skaters are inferior in level to world leaders in this discipline.
– If we take the ten best athletes in the world, then we can compete with them. If we talk about the first places in the world championship, then here it is necessary to show intricate quadruple toothed jumps. Here Sasha Samarin pulled off a beautiful quadruple lutz today. And so far, salchows and sheepskin coats predominate in our programs – it’s hard to compete with such a set.
It is also very important to resist arbitrariness. Many of our boys do not deploy such a set of programs purely functionally. If we are progressing right now, if they are not only skating freely, but also short, then it will be possible to say that we are at world level five, three,” Goncharenko said.
On December 22, at the Russian Figure Skating Championship, Petr Gumennik won the short program with 104.47 points. Evgeny Semenenko (99.15 points) is second and Andrey Mozalev completes the top three (98.70).
