IBA suspended from holding a boxing tournament at the Olympics due to a contract with Gazprom

The tournament will be hosted by another organization

IBA suspended from the boxing tournament for Olympics 2024 due to the current contract with the Russian company Gazprom.

“The IBA Congress showed once again that the IBA has no real interest in boxing and boxers, but only in its own strength. The decisions and discussions to keep boxers out of the Olympic Qualifiers and the Olympic Games cannot be understood otherwise.”

“The extension of the sponsorship contract with Gazprom as the sole main sponsor of the IBA reinforces the concerns that the IOC has repeatedly expressed since 2019,” the International Olympic Committee said.

“This statement confirms that IBA will continue to be dependent on a company largely controlled by the Russian government. The IOC will have to take all of this into account when it makes further decisions which may – after these latest developments – include the abolition of boxing at the Paris 2024 Olympics.”

Recall that the International Olympic Committee has decided to remove the International Boxing Federation (IBA) from holding a boxing tournament at the 2024 Olympics. Note that Ukrainian boxers will be able to participate in the tournament.

The 2024 Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
