– I understand that some types of sports can’t go, but some can’t. If this decision is made, it means that we will go through all types at once. It seems to me that if fencing wants to go to Asia, and judo wants to stay in Russia, it will probably be unrealistic.
If we enter the Asian Fencing Confederation (AFC), then, of course, there are competing countries, but they are much less than in Europe. Of course, it would be desirable to enter the African Confederation, there is no one else but Egypt. We will be at the Olympics without a fight. Or, optionally, at the Pan American Fencing Confederation (PAFC), there is no one but the United States.
Europe is the strongest, especially in the Olympic selection. Many of the strongest teams do not qualify for the European Olympic Games. In second place is the Asian confederation, and in third – Pan American, African in fourth.
The Europeans, most likely, are even happy that we were expelled. We are continental competitors for them. But if we get to the Olympics, we will still represent our country there. Well, at least I hope so. Of course, they’ll gladly make sure we’re not there. In the summer, in Cairo, France for the first time, in my opinion, won the team event. Six team events and two Olympics.
In recent years, we have won almost everything. Only the Italians lost once in 2018, when we weren’t allowed to prepare well. Now in Cairo, at the World Cup, France won for the first time. And the next Olympic Games, as you know, are in France. Well, what do you think, why do the French need us in Paris? They will be happy to fencing without us at the Olympics,” Mammadov said.
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has suspended Russian athletes from participating in international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
