Gumennik admitted he thought about doing a quadruple axel

Russian figure skating championship silver medalist Piotr Gumennik said in an interview with that he tried to do a quadruple axel on a fishing rod.

In September 2022, at the US International Classic in Lake Placid, 18-year-old Ilya Malinin became the first figure skater in history to perform a quadruple Axel in competition.

Gumennik took second place at the 2023 Russian Championship in Krasnoyarsk. The first was Evgeny Semenenko (295.07). Gumennik scored the same number of points (295.07), but took second place, as he scored lower for the free program: 190.60 points compared to 195.92 points for Semenenko.

– If you add a quadruple lutz to the program, then you will have the most difficult technical set among Russian single skaters. Is there a will to fight for it?

Now I skip it all the time, every day. It no longer causes injury. However, it is not always advisable to carry it out. For example, in competitions where you can score the most points even without. In this case, it makes more sense to ride without.

— Do you focus on the content of your rivals?

– Yes, that’s correct.

– And when you see that Ilya Malinin is doing a quadruple axel, there is no desire to try?

– I thought about it. I tried the quadruple axel on a fishing rod in the summer. I came to the conclusion that quadruple jumps should not be taught this way: jumping in a half turn, then constantly falling and falling, trying to jump over this gap by attempts. First you have to fit in. If it doesn’t work, you have to wait, practice something, increase jump height, twist speed, then try again. Because technique deteriorates due to falls, fear or injury may arise.

Since 2017, Goumennik has been training with Veronika Daineko at the Tamara Moskvina figure skating sports club.
