Silver medalist of the Russian Figure Skating Championship Pierre Gumennik spoke in an interview with about advice from famed coach Rafael Harutyunyan ahead of the tournament.
Gumennik took second place at the 2023 Russian Championship in Krasnoyarsk. The first was Evgeny Semenenko (295.07). Gumennik scored a similar number of points (295.07), but took second place, as he scored lower for the free program: 190.60 points compared to 195.92 points for Evgeny.
– How do you explain the reason for the success of this season? Keep in mind it’s post-Olympic and the leaders may not be at their best?
– I didn’t think it was necessary to bet on this season, despite the fact that it is post-Olympic. I didn’t understand one way or another. Like I said before, I just stabilized the quads, found the right technique. We competently worked with Veronika Anatolyevna and Rafael Harutyunyan. Personally, of course, he could not attend the training, but he advised and helped.
“Didn’t you contact Nathan Chen for more advice?”
“No, Nathan just said hello to me. Did not interact closely with him. But with Rafael Vladimirovich – tight.
What tips have helped the most?
– We started working together more than a year ago – we changed equipment. It was hard. At first it was even worse, you might say. Still, that was unusual with the new technology. Now I have already accustomed her to my body. Everything has become comfortable, the jumps are going well.
– Did the Mishin base go against Harutyunyan’s advice?
“I have a very particular technique. Veronika Anatolyevna believes that she is mine – the author.
– So now you can give advice yourself to the guys in your group?
She’s not the best though.
– Rafael Vladimirovich congratulated you on an excellent result?
– Yes. Parting words also said. You have to work on the glide.
Since 2017, Goumennik has been training with Veronika Daineko at the Tamara Moskvina figure skating sports club. Harutyunyan is the coach of three-time world champion and 2022 Olympic champion Nathan Chen.
