“Panfilova and Rylov ended their careers not because of the world situation, but because of serious injuries” – coach of figure skaters

Junior World Figure Skating Champions Apollinaire Panfilova and Dmitry Rylov ended their careers not because of the withdrawal of Russian athletes from international competitions, but because of a series of serious injuries, the pair’s coach Pavel Slyusarenko told .

On Thursday, Panfilova and Rylov, who competed in pair skating, announced their decision on social media. The duo won the 2020 World Junior Championships. Additionally, 19-year-old Panfilova and 21-year-old Rylov became Youth Olympic Games champions and Grand Prix Final winners in juniors.

How did you react to this decision of your couple?

We collectively made this decision. For two years, the guys have been haunted by injuries. Only it seems that Dima recovered from his back, restored all the elements, Polina immediately got injured, which stunned the guys for a long time. More the world situation. The guys, apparently, are tired of being treated, recovering, and therefore decided to secure their careers.

– You mentioned, among other things, the world situation. So does it affect motivation?

– Yes, because when they were injured, then they won everything on the world stage. At the same time, athletes see that the Russian Figure Skating Federation motivates athletes in every possible way, now there are many competitions. The main reason (for retirement), of course, is not this. The main reason is a series of injuries in recent years.

– What are the future plans of Panfilova and Rylov?

– Most likely, they will go to the show. Anyway, something will be related to figure skating, after all, they have been doing it for so many years,” Slyusarenko told .
