Team Head Coach Russia swimming Sergei Shepik spoke about the schedule of training events for the season, among which will be a mountain camp, and noted the need for pool competitions for marathon runners.
Russian swimmers have been suspended from performing under the auspices of World Aquatics amid the situation in Ukraine.
How are you going to prepare for the first part of the season?
“In January we will be in Krugloye, February – mountain rally and Krugloye, March – in Krugloye,” Chepik told .
– Due to partial mobilization, were there any problems going to training camp?
– Not. There was a situation with two athletes, but there was just a moment of clarification of the data, nothing more.
– Was the Volgograd tournament at 5000m in the pool near open water? Why was it organized and why in the second half of the season?
– In the current realities, it is important to organize starts at 5000 meters in the pool so that those who compete in open water show speed in the pool – this trend has been going on for several years and the younger generation must adapt to it. So far we are losing momentum to almost every leading team. We said you had to know how to swim on a wave, against the wind, against the sun, but, basically, those are excuses. If 50 people swim fast, then there will be five who learn to deal with the wind, the wave better than the others. Yes, this is also necessary, but first you need to be able to reach such speed and maintain it. This decision was therefore methodologically justified. For some this looks like an innovation, but in fact for a number of national teams it is an established practice.
