WADA ready to apply to CAS after receiving RUSADA’s decision on Valieva case

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reserves the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the case of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva according to the organization’s website.

On Friday, the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) informed WADA that it had made a decision in the Valieva case. It was acknowledged that although she committed an anti-doping rule violation, there was “no fault or negligence on her part”. Valieva escaped penalties other than disqualification of her results as of the date of collection (December 25, 2021).

WADA has requested a copy of the full reasoned decision, which it will review with the file to determine if the decision is consistent with WADA’s decisions.

“The agency is concerned about the finding of no fault or negligence and will not hesitate to exercise its right of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, depending on the situation,” WADA said in a statement.

Valieva at the Beijing Olympics as part of the Russian team won gold in team competitions. Before the personal tournament, it became known that the illegal drug trimetazidine was discovered during the figure skater’s doping test. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) cleared Valieva to participate in individual competitions, where she finished fourth. The allocation of national teams following the results of the team tournament has not yet taken place.

CAS later reported that WADA had requested a four-year ban from Valieva for an anti-doping rule violation and the voiding of her results in competitions since December 25, 2021, including the 2022 European Championships and the 2022 Beijing Olympics. WADA appealed to CAS because RUSADA failed to make a decision in the case of a 16-year-old figure skater in a timely manner.
