Costume designer Kolobova about Trusova’s refusal to cooperate: “I could not convince that I see her elegantly”

Costume designer Svetlana Kolobova in an interview with told how she worked with the stars of Russian figure skating.

Kolobova was nominated for the International Skating Union (ISU) award in the Best Costume category for the dresses of American figure skater Isabeau Levito.

– In old photographs from your social networks there are Ryzhiks, Tarasova and Morozov. Don’t they work with you now?

– Yes, we worked a lot with them, including demo performances! Not anymore. Although I really liked their yin-yang suit from our work.

I still have a photo of the fitting at three in the morning. They then flew from America for three days. For three days we sent the costumes, they took them away at three in the morning, I managed to take a picture and immediately flew away. But in these costumes they came out once, I think in America.

Doesn’t suit you, you didn’t like it? What to do in general in such a situation when the athlete refused the combination?

We haven’t talked to them about it. Probably, something did not suit Zueva.

In general, it was like that with Trusova. It was the Romeo and Juliet program. I wanted to do something interesting and extravagant for her. She already had a green one with flowers, and she came to see us for this program. I could not convince that I see her elegant.

– Because she is “bad fate”!

– Yes! We wanted to bring it to life, but… We made five dresses, which were then immediately taken to different countries. Anything wrong, we sell it, no problem at all.

We consider it normal for athletes to refuse if they don’t like it or if they presented their costume incorrectly. Many simply cannot see from the sketch what is going to happen. Then buy from ready-made options. Fortunately, we have a lot of them (when we have time, we sew for the window).

Everyone’s tastes are different. If she didn’t want to, then she didn’t see herself in it. It’s okay – I’m a new designer for her, and it’s a new image and perception of myself. She is used to working with others and we didn’t have time to get to know her as a client and find common ground.
