The EOC is “in solidarity with Ukraine”, but “does not believe that it is necessary to prohibit participation in competitions solely on the basis of a passport”
Organization European Olympic Committees (EOC) supported the proposal of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about possible return of Russian and Belarusian athletes for international competitions.
“The EOC continues to demonstrate its solidarity with Ukraine. With the full support of the EOC, 25 Ukrainian athletes who have achieved significant success are taking part in the Winter European Youth Olympic Festival.
“Following the recommendations of the IOC, the EOC has also extended sports sanctions against Russian officials and symbols. Given the security conditions, athletes from Russia or Belarus are not yet participating in the competition.”
“Regarding the future participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competitions, the EOC appreciates the importance of removing barriers in order for sport to act as a unifying force. This is especially true of Europe, which unites different people of different nations. The EOC does not believe that athletes should be banned from competing solely on the basis of what kind of passport they have.”
“The EOC reviewed the current status of participation by Russia and Belarus at the Executive Committee meeting on 21 January and will continue its efforts to explore possible solutions in line with consultations conducted by the IOC.”
Recall that the IOC is ready to consider the possibility of admitting athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions. In this case, everyone who wishes will be required to act in a neutral status. Also, athletes should not support the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
The Olympic Summit, chaired by IOC President Thomas Bach, unanimously agreed to accept the initiative proposed by the Olympic Council of Asia, allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in its competitions.
Later, the Asian Olympic Committee (OCA) officially invited athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in competitions in Asia, including the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
