The European Olympic Committees also believe that there are athletes who have nothing to do with the Kremlin.

Russian athletes are getting closer to returning to the sports arenas and participating in the Olympics. It can be recalled that earlier the Asian Olympic Committee invited athletes from aggressor countries to participate in the Asian Games.

Today it became known that the European Olympic Committee is not against the return of Russians and Belarusians to international tournaments. They expressed their position in an official statement.

“The EOC continues to show its solidarity with Ukraine. With the full support of the EOC, 25 Ukrainian athletes who achieved significant success participated in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival with the full support of the EOC.

Following the IOC’s recommendations, the EOC also dropped sports sanctions against Russian officials and symbols. Due to security conditions, athletes from Russia or Belarus have not yet participated in the competition.

Regarding the future participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international competitions, the EOC appreciates the importance of removing obstacles so that sport can act as a unifying force.

This is especially true in Europe, which unites different people of different countries. The EOC does not believe that athletes should be banned from competing based solely on their passport.

The EOC reviewed the current status of the participation of Russia and Belarus at the Executive Committee meeting on January 21 and will continue its efforts to explore possible solutions in accordance with the consultations held by the IOC.

Statement on behalf of the EOC Athletes’ Commission:

Every athlete should have the right to compete in a safe and dignified manner. European athletes can be proud of how the EOC allowed Ukrainian athletes to do this.

Sport is also fair when all athletes who are eligible to compete have the opportunity to do so. The EOC Athletes’ Commission will continue to discuss the proper way to do this,” the EOC said in a statement.

Recall that earlier the NOC reported that if the Russians were admitted, Ukraine could boycott the Olympics.
