Shovkovskiy: We understand that Scotland’s strengths are set pieces and counterattacks

Tomorrow will be the semi-final match of the playoffs for access to the World Cup

Ukraine national team coach Alexander Shovkovsky analyzed the strengths Scotland national team ahead of the 2022 World Cup qualifying match.

The former national team goalkeeper also recalled how he played against the Scots in the selection for Euro 2008.

“It was a very, very long time ago. Of course, these were two different teams with which we played: one was in Kyiv, the other was in Glasgow. And the Ukrainian national team, if I’m not mistaken, at that time had already abandoned the hope that it would leave the group, so the mood was completely different. It’s very difficult, insane support,” said Shovkovsky.

“We know all the fighting qualities of the Scots – they have it historically. But we also know our mentality – Ukrainian. I am sure that motivation, on the one hand, and on the other, will be maximum. Everyone wants to go to the World Cup in Qatar.”

“My memories [о матче в отборе на Евро-2008] today – these are exclusively my thoughts, some feelings about what happened. But today we are focused exclusively and are developing those moments that can help us in the fight against Scotland.

“If we’re talking about the Scottish team, it’s fighting qualities. Set pieces are problematic for Scotland’s rivals – we understand that this is a strong point. And counterattacks.

Ukraine and Scotland will play in the play-off semi-finals for qualification to the World Cup. The match in Glasgow will take place tomorrow, June 1, at 21:45 Kyiv time.

The winner will advance to the play-off final, where they will play against Wales on 5 June.
