The United Nations believes that the current situation is discrimination against athletes from the aggressor country.

Allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international competitions. Such an appeal was published on the official website of the UN. Its authors are experts in the field of cultural rights and contemporary forms of racial discrimination and xenophobia Alexandra Xantaki and Ashwini KP

In their opinion, the current state of sports affairs discriminates against Russians by nationality.

“We call on the IOC to take a decision in this direction and continue by ensuring that any athlete is not discriminated against on the basis of their nationality.

The IOC’s recommendation raised serious issues of direct discrimination because athletes should not be discriminated against based on nationality.

We understand the desire to support Ukrainian athletes and the Olympic community of Ukraine, which, together with all Ukrainians, is suffering from the war.

But the Olympic Committee, and more broadly the Olympic community, is also bound by the Olympic Charter and, more broadly, international human rights law that prohibits discrimination.

When states blatantly ignore human rights, we have a greater obligation to uphold our shared values,” the statement said.

It will be recalled that earlier the IOC discussed the conditions for the return of the Russians to the arena. According to international functionaries, athletes who do not actively support the war in Ukraine must participate in the competition in a neutral status.

At the same time, Ukraine’s NOC is convening the General Assembly to discuss the boycott of the Olympic Games in the event that athletes from aggressor countries are admitted.
