Well-known Russian figure skater in the past, and now coach Katarina Gerboldt told about the Olympic champion Alina Zagitova who won the 2022 MarSpo Awards in the New Age Athlete nomination.
The MarSpo Awards have been held annually since 2017. All major sports clubs, leagues, agencies and sponsors take part.
– Alina Zagitova received an award in the nomination “Athlete of the New Time”. The award is given to athletes who begin to realize themselves in new roles. Do you think it’s not too early for Alina to be nominated? She is still an active athlete.
“Probably it manifests itself in some way outside of sports,” Gerboldt quotes Sports Day by Day. – But active athletes compete, and I personally have not seen her for a long time.
– Zagitova said that she improves the sport. What is Alina doing for Russian sport now?
– This question is for Alina, not for me. She knows better what she is doing and what she is doing for Russian figure skating, maybe she is helping someone.
– Can we consider his performances in ice shows as propaganda for figure skating?
– Yes of course. Thanks to people like Alina, figure skating is the most popular sport in our country.
– Who do you see Zagitova in the future: a deputy, a journalist, a sports director?
– I never communicated closely with Alina, I do not know her as a person, and I cannot say what qualities prevail in her. But life doesn’t stop at figure skating. Athletes have to try other roles, and not everyone can be a coach.
Zagitova is the first Russian figure skater to win the title of champion in all important tournaments: at the Olympics, World Championships, European Championships and the Grand Prix Series Final.
