Maguchy: Learned a lesson from the situation with Lasitskene

The athlete was photographed with a Russian woman at the Olympics in Tokyo

Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslav Maguchy said that she was worried a lot because of the scandal with the photo with the Russian Maria Lasitskene at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Then it turned out that at first I didn’t want to approach her [Ласицкене]I was still thinking about it. But then the photographers called us so that the three of us [призерки Олимпиады] took a photo but an australian [Никола Макдермотт] changed shoes. I was already with the flag and Masha then greeted. And here we were photographed, and everything scattered. And I thought, “Where have I gotten myself into?”

“Now I have already experienced it, but it was difficult. I very rarely cried then, most of all I was inside, I lost a lot of weight. It was stress after the Olympics and because of this situation. My coach was also very worried.”

“Thanks to the support of my family, coach, people, I survived it and just learned the lesson that this happens, you need to be more persistent. It was and was, I know that it is like a brand for me.

“Now when they ask me: “The war has begun, what do you say?” Well, I had such a situation, but I actively support Ukraine, stand for Ukraine and raise our flag. I help the Armed Forces of Ukraine, transfer money, but I don’t cover it.”

At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Maguchih won bronze with a score of 2.00 meters. Lasitskene became the Olympic champion, having conquered the bar at a height of 2.04 meters.

After a public outcry, Maguchy stated that she remained loyal to Ukraine. Yaroslava also urged other athletes “to be careful, because the enemy is ready for anything.”
