If the Olympic figure skating champion Alina Zagitova wants to run for the State Duma, she will receive support in Tatarstan, MP Svetlana Zhurova believes.
Earlier, after winning the 2022 MarSpo Awards in the New Age Athlete nomination, Zagitova announced her desire to work to benefit the sport.
– Why does everyone immediately see athletes as MPs? Dzyuba, for example, is promoted to deputy. When an athlete comes to me, I tell him what to expect. A Member of Parliament is not someone who promotes sport, but someone who communicates with voters. It is very difficult for MPs to communicate with people, to solve their problems, it is much more difficult than simply developing the sport. By the way, in order to develop sports, it is not necessary to be in the State Duma.
At 20, Alina will not go to the deputies. In the future, she can be appointed as a deputy of Tatarstan. She will be supported there, the people there trust her. If she gets an education, she has a chance to enter the State Duma. Gymnasts, figure skaters and other early sports have a fantastic opportunity to realize themselves after sports. They already have a name, it remains only to study,” Zhurova told Sport Day by Day.
In December 2019, Zagitova put her career on hold. Now the 20-year-old figure skater does not participate in official tournaments.
