The IOC is trying to drag athletes from Russia and Belarus to the 2024 Olympics in Paris
Mayor of Paris Ann Hidalgo during her speech at the Kyiv City Council, she confirmed that she against the admission of Russians to the 2024 Olympicswhich will be held in the capital of France.
“In a year, we will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. You rightly wondered about the permission that a host city could grant to athletes who are citizens of a country that commits the worst war crimes against your population. We understand you.”
“That is why I want to express my conviction and my will to you: as long as Russian troops continue to bomb you, target your civilian population and your infrastructure, as long as Russian soldiers occupy your territory, I do not want Russian athletes to participate in sports competitions.”
“This is my conviction as a mayor, as a political leader, as a convinced European. I have no doubt that the International Olympic Committee will be able to support this position.”
Previously, Anne Hidalgo has already opposed the participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympics, including in a neutral status, while the Russian Federation continues the war against Ukraine.
Recall that the IOC is ready to consider the possibility of admitting athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions. In this case, everyone who wishes will be required to act in a neutral status. Also, athletes should not support the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and pass a mandatory doping test.
The Olympic Summit, chaired by IOC President Thomas Bach, unanimously agreed to accept an initiative proposed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to take part in its competitions. The OCA is developing a special system that will allow Russians to qualify for the Olympics through Asian competitions.
The IOC believes that a complete ban on the performance of Russian and Belarusian athletes is discrimination and is contrary to the Olympic Charter. The organizers of the 2024 Olympics in Paris said they would adhere to the IOC decision to allow Russians and Belarusians to compete under a neutral flag.
