Joshua: I see myself as a contender, I have a different mindset now

Anthony is looking forward to a good fight with Franklin

Former World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua commented on the upcoming fight with the American Jermain Franklin and choosing a new coach.

“When you’re looking for greatness, when you’re looking for the best, you have to step outside of your comfort zone and seek-search. I ended up in Texas and Derrick James is a good coach among many other coaches. But on the small list that I chose, I felt that Derrick was right for me.”

“I look at myself as a contender. When you have belts and you are a champion, you have to fight in a certain way. Because you protect what you have. Now I have nothing to protect, so I’m going to come in with a different mindset, and that’s a big difference.”

“This is a natural transition. Like hunter and prey. I’m just on the other end of the spectrum right now and I just need to readjust. Jermain Franklin is also on the same end of the spectrum, so it will be a good fight.”

Joshu vs Franklin will take place on April 1 at the O2 Arena in London. This will be Joshua’s first fight since losing to Oleksandr Usyk in a rematch. Last August, the Ukrainian defeated the Briton by split decision and retained the WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight titles.

After losing to Usyk, Anthony negotiated a fight with WBC title holder Tyson Fury, but the parties failed to agree. Joshua also considered the option of holding a duel against Dillian Whyte.

Derrick James is the new coach for former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. He replaced Robert Garcia.
