Turkish national handball team captain found dead under rubble

Cemal Kutahya became another victim of the devastating earthquake in Turkey

Turkish national handball team captain Jemal Kutahya found dead under the rubble in the city of Hatay.

It was discovered more than a week after the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. His 5-year-old son Chinar, his pregnant wife and mother-in-law also died.

Kütahya played for the Turkish national handball and beach handball teams. He was the top scorer for his team at Euro 2019 and 2021 in beach handball.

Hatayspor football player Christian Atsu and club director Taner Savut are still under the rubble. The information that the former Chelsea and Newcastle football player was rescued turned out to be unreliable.

Recall that because of the earthquake, the Turkish football championship was suspended. Two clubs have already withdrawn from the tournament – Gaziantep and Hatayspor. Both clubs were hit by a powerful earthquake that hit Turkey on 6 February. More than 41 thousand people became its victims.
