An immunologist explained the causes of serious complications to Kostomarov

The deterioration of the health of the Olympic champion Roman Kostomarova may be due to a weakened immune system due to high loads, explains immunologist Nailya Setdikova.

Kostomarov is under medical supervision. His hospitalization became known in January. It was previously reported that the 46-year-old figure skater had his left foot amputated, the purpose of the operation was to remove necrosis and stop the process of cell death. Later, cases of amputation of hands were reported.

– Each person has an individual immune system. There is no universal reaction to diseases, which is why Kostomarov can have such serious complications. Many factors can lead to complications after pneumonia or COVID-19. You need to see Roman’s medical records to understand the whole picture.

Strange as it may seem, but in athletes, due to high loads, the immune system becomes more vulnerable to viruses, immunoglobulin levels decrease, and the body’s defenses weaken. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to Roman. Older athletes need to check their health more carefully, Setdikova told Sport24.

Kostomarov, together with Tatyana Navka, won the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin in ice dancing. In addition, the athletes are twice world champions (2004, 2005) and three times winners of the European Championships (2004, 2005, 2006).
