The appeal of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) against the decision of the RUSADA Disciplinary Committee in the case of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will be considered quickly if the parties agree on it, sports lawyer Anna Antseliovich suggested.
On Tuesday, WADA issued a statement calling DAK RUSADA’s decision erroneous and appealed the Valieva case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). DAK RUSADA previously found that although the athlete committed an anti-doping rule violation, she bears “no fault or negligence”. Valieva escaped penalties other than the cancellation of her results as of the December 25, 2021 sample date.
– If the parties agree on an accelerated examination, agree on a timetable, the CAS will have to examine this case as soon as possible. WADA, I think, is interested in it.
“And the Russian part?”
– The expedited review is a big burden for the representatives, and we do not know the position of the athlete’s defense. In general, an expedited review is not always beneficial if additional evidence or substantiation is needed, Antseliovich told .
Valieva at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing helped the Russian team win gold in the team competition. Before the personal tournament, it became known that the illegal drug trimetazidine was found during the doping test of the Russian championship skater. The CAS allowed the Russian woman to participate in the individual competitions of the Games, where she took fourth place.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to postpone the award ceremony for the team tournament until the end of the athlete’s trial.
