Malignaggi: Lomachenko has beaten big lightweights before. Haney will have to show something more

Lomachenko-Haney fight scheduled for May 20 in Las Vegas

Former Light Welterweight Champion Paul Malignaggi commented on the upcoming fight between the former champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenko and undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney.

“Lomachenko wanted to win the title of undisputed champion for so long. That has been his main goal since turning pro and now he has that opportunity again.”

“Last time this opportunity slipped out of his hands when he pulled out of the fight with Kambosos because of the war in Ukraine, where his family, friends, business were located. A lot has changed his life.”

“I think Haney has had a less difficult road to undisputed champion status than anyone else, but he’s still an undisputed champion nonetheless. He will have to show more than just a set of basic skills if he wants to beat Lomachenko. Yes, he’s a big lightweight who knows how to use his physical size and his athleticism.”

“Lomachenko has had trouble with bigger lightweights in the past, but he has also shown that he knows how to beat them in some cases.”

Lomachenko is in training camp in the US and preparing to fight Haney. Earlier there was information that the fight will take place on May 20 in Las Vegas. At the same time, Haney wants to fight Lomachenko in Saudi Arabia.

Lomachenko defeated American Jemaine Ortiz in his last fight. For the Ukrainian, this was the first and only fight for 10 months.

Last October, Haney defeated George Kambosos again to retain the WBC, WBA Super, IBF and WBO lightweight titles.
