Lithuania and the Scandinavian countries opposed the return of Russians and Belarusians to international fencing competitions

Last week, the FIE lifted the ban on the performance of fencers from Russia and Belarus

Lithuanian Fencing Federation And Fencing Union of the Scandinavian countries did not support solution International Fencing Federation (FIE) return Russians and Belarusians to international competitions.

“On Friday, the FIE decided to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in competitions under its auspices. Despite the shameful vote, the Lithuanian Fencing Federation, together with the Scandinavian Fencing Union, adheres to a tough and one-sided position, according to which Russian and Belarusian athletes have no right to participate in any international competitions and selection for the Olympic Games under any circumstances.”

“We do not support the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under a neutral white flag. We are together with Ukraine.”

At an extraordinary FIE congress, it was decided to remove the ban from Russian and Belarusian athletes. The decision comes into force in the second half of April 2023. The International Olympic Committee took note of the decision of the FIE to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete.

The Fencing Federation of Ukraine twice filed a request to block this decision, but their protest was not satisfied. In addition, the FIE allowed the official representatives of the Russian Federation and Belarus to return to the structures.
