Vernyaev reduced the disqualification. Gymnast cleared to return to competition

He has not performed since November 2020

Head of the Independent Artistic Gymnastics Federation in Ukraine Oleg Vernyaev announced that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) accepted his appeal and reduced the suspension from GEF.

The disqualification was valid until November 2024. Now the gymnast was allowed to return to the competitive process.

“I’m in line. It was a long process in which I proved that I had no intention to dope. The court reduced the sanction by half. This suggests that the court agreed with my arguments and confirmed that meldonium entered the body through no fault of mine or negligence,” Vernyaev wrote.

Vernyaev was disqualified for four years due to meldonium found in the body. According to the athlete, the disqualification countdown began in November 2020.

Oleg Vernyaev is a participant in two Olympics. At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, he won a gold and a silver medal.

During the full-scale invasion, Vernyaev repeatedly spoke out in support of the Ukrainian people and army. Oleg also advocated a full-fledged ban for athletes from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.
