Statue of Zidane headbutting Materazzi’s chest to be put on display again in Doha

In 2013, it was dismantled due to criticism.

A statuedepicting Zinedine Zidane kick head to chest Marco Materazzi in the final World Cup 2006, will be installed in the new sports museum in Doha. This was announced by the head of the museums of Qatar, Sheikha Al-Mayassa Al-Thani, sister of the Emir of Qatar.

“Societies are evolving. This takes time. People at first condemn, but then they understand and get used to it. Zidane is a great friend of Qatar and a role model throughout the Arab world,” said Sheikha Al Mayassa.

The statue of Zidane punching Materazzi was created by Algerian sculptor Adel Abdessemed. In 2013, it was put on display in Doha, but a few days later it was dismantled due to criticism. Some people believed that she encouraged idolatry and violence.

The final World Cup match between France and Italy took place on July 9, 2006 in Berlin. In the 110th minute, Zidane headbutted Materazzi in the chest and received a red card. Italy beat Le Bleu in a penalty shootout to win the World Cup.
