“Prize money should be part of a unique concept in which an athlete works to popularize competitions” – ex-director of Russian Winter

Prize payments that athletes receive should be part of a single concept in which an athlete increases spectator interest in competitions, says Mikhail Butov, former director of the Russian Winter Athletics Tournament.

– I always advocate that athletes receive rewards for their work, and I try to do so in my projects. However, the prize money must be part of a unique story, a concept in which the athlete works to promote the competition in which he participates and ensures that the general interest of the spectators increases. Prizes must be well deserved.

Often abroad, athletes receive payments simply for their participation. But at the same time they should be involved in promoting the tournament – giving interviews, writing something on social networks, taking part in some activities in agreement with the organizers. And such an approach, in my opinion, is justified and reasonable,” Butov said in an interview with RT.

This season, a series of athletic tournaments “Queen of Russian Sports” is held. Prizes of 50,000 rubles are set for winning each stage of the series, 30,000 for second place and 20,000 for third.

– Finally, we took a serious look at competitions, because in recent years they have not received much attention. And that’s bad, because competition is how sport is presented to the outside world. If they are not interesting to the fans or even once a year, they forget about athletics. Therefore, this vector is correct in itself: the viewer gets used to the series,” Butov noted.
