Raising age limit will benefit skaters’ health, Rodnina says

Three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina spoke about the decision to raise the age limit in figure skating, the decision was made at the congress of the International Skating Union (ISU).

The ISU has accepted the organisation’s board’s proposal to gradually raise the age limit to 17 years. This became known on the second day of the congress, which is taking place in Phuket. 100 people voted in favor of raising the qualification, 16 voted against and 2 abstained.

– Everything is possible. Russian figure skaters and almost 30 years have won prizes. Why do we forget about Masha Butyrskaya? Our first world champion. What has given you so much rest during these 15 years? What is a disaster? It is a catastrophe only for the children who, after 15 years, no longer know what to do. It seems to me that this will bring a little more health to the level of athletes and these completely useless conversations, quotes RT Rodnina.

Next season, the bar for participating in adult competitions will remain at the current level – 15 years. In the 2023/24 season the age limit will be raised to 16 and in 2024/25 to 17. It was also decided to raise the age limit in other ISU disciplines – in speed skating and short track.
