“Practice shows that at this age we are the strongest” – Gerboldt on raising the age limit to 17

Former Russian figure skater Catherine Gerboldt commented on the decision to raise the age limit to 17, taken at the International Skating Union (ISU) congress.

The ISU Congress on Tuesday adopted a proposal by the organization’s board of directors to gradually raise the age limit to 17. 100 people voted in favor of raising the qualification, 16 voted against and 2 abstained.

– It’s no secret that it’s more difficult for girls to ride horses at a transitional age. But in general, lately, we have Olympic champions at 17 and 18. In other words, practice shows that at this age we are the strongest. Has the ISU extended our suspension? It seems to me that in connection with the latest current events, expect something different from what has happened now … Of course, there were hopes, but it was hard to believe that this would be different, “Championship” Gerboldt quotes the words.

Next season, the bar for participating in adult competitions will remain at the current level – 15 years. In the 2023/24 season the age limit will be raised to 16 and in 2024/25 to 17. It was also decided to raise the age limit in other ISU disciplines – in speed skating and short track.
