International Weightlifting Federation to review IOC recommendations on admitting Russian athletes

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) released a statement regarding the recommendations International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the possible participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, reports the press service of the organization.

The IOC Executive Board recommended on Tuesday that Russian and Belarusian athletes should only be allowed to participate in international competitions as neutral athletes, and that only those who have not spoken publicly in favor of the SVO in Ukraine and are not associated with armed forces or national security agencies. The proposals of the executive committee are of an advisory nature, the criteria for the admission of Russians should be determined by the international sports federations.

— The IWF supports the maintenance of IOC sanctions against Russia and Belarus. We have taken note of the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board, which establishes strict conditions under which athletes holding Russian or Belarusian passports may be allowed to participate in competitions organized by international federations on a neutral individual basis. We will need time to carefully study the manual and determine if and how it can be applied to weightlifting.

The IWF Board will provide an update once the recommendation has been fully addressed. In the meantime, the protective measures introduced last year remain in place at present, the organization said in a statement.

Previously, the IWF, on the recommendation of the IOC, decided to withdraw Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions.
