Andrey Yermak urged FIG President not to lift sanctions from Russian and Belarusian gymnasts

Morinari Watanabe arrived in Ukraine on a visit

Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andrey Ermak had a meeting with the President International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Morinari Watanabewho came to Ukraine on a visit and called him support the initiative to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the 2024 Olympics.

“We know that sanctions are the best non-lethal means of influence. Therefore, Ukraine emphasizes the need to extend the sanctions. And one of them is to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the Olympic Games and other competitions.”

“I convey greetings from the President – he sincerely appreciates your personal visit to Ukraine, and I especially ask you to take into account the information provided during today’s meeting when making a decision on the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions. We hope that you will understand our pain, our tragedy.”

Earlier, the President visited Ukraine International Biathlon Union (IBU) Olle Dalinwho commented on the possible return of Russians and Belarusians to international competitions.

Recall that the IOC Executive Committee recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, teams from Russia and Belarus, as well as athletes who support the war or have a contract with the armies of the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus, are not allowed to participate in the tournaments.

The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine sent letters to the Olympic committees of other countries and international federations regarding the exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions. Also, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to boycott the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which will allow Russian and Belarusian athletes.
