Hearn: Joshua needs one more set-up fight before fighting Fury or Wilder

A new fight is expected to take place in the summer

Promoter Eddie Hearn said that he intends to organize another preparatory fight for the ex-world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshuabefore the Briton can enter the ring with Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder.

“The general feeling is that we need another fight. A level above Franklin to pull myself together and keep improving,” the promoter said.

“We also know that a fight with Tyson Fury, if it happens at all, is possible in the summer and this may be the only chance. This is a difficult decision. If we want to keep improving, extending our boxing life and getting in shape to the max, then we need to get another fight.”

“Momentum is key for AJ. He has boxed twice a year and once a year since the pandemic for the past three or four years. I want him to box in July and then in December. I think it will be very useful for him to take a couple of weeks off and then immediately return to Texas with trainer Derrick James.

“Every fan and every broadcaster will say, ‘Give us Fury. Give us Wilder.” I feel that we should go down this path. Another fight under Derrick James will bolster that confidence.”

Joshua defeated Jermain Franklin via unanimous decision in his last fight. The fight lasted all 12 rounds. All judges gave the victory to Joshua – 118-111 and twice 117-112.

This is the first victory for Joshua after two defeats in a row to Oleksandr Usyk. After his second loss to Usyk, Anthony negotiated a fight with WBC title holder Tyson Fury, but the parties failed to agree.
