Gutzeit: Now we are not talking about a boycott of the Olympics, we are working to prevent Russians and Belarusians from participating in international tournaments

The head of the NOC plans to continue working with sports federations

Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Vadim Gutzeit said that the question of boycott of the 2024 Olympics Ukraine is not worth it at the moment. The efforts of the NOC are aimed at preventing Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions.

“From the first day of the war, we have been working to ensure that Russian and Belarusian athletes are not at the international level. For more than a year we succeeded, for more than a year they were not. Unfortunately, the IOC has now provided new recommendations on return or non-return, handing over the responsibility to each International Federation separately, so that they allow or not allow at their discretion.

“We continue to work. Now the entire responsibility for admission lies with the federations. We need to collect all this evidence together in order to provide it to the IOC. I am sure that the IOC will also follow this process.”

“It is necessary that the international federations look honestly at this evidence when athletes from the Russian Federation are in the armed forces or support the war. So that they see this and remove these athletes.”

“That’s why we continue to work together with the federations. Now we are not talking about a boycott, the main thing is that Russians and Belarusians should not be returned in all international federations.”

Recall, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to boycott the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, which will allow Russian and Belarusian athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already reacted to the decision of the Government of Ukraine to boycott the qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Earlier, the IOC Executive Board recommended the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions in a neutral status. At the same time, teams from Russia and Belarus, as well as athletes who support the war or have a contract with the armies of the Russian Federation or the Republic of Belarus, are not allowed to participate in the tournaments.
