Former women’s head coach Russian team handball Yevgeny Trefilov spoke about the situation of Russian handball after being suspended from participating in international competitions.
— Last season, for the first time, the EHF paid no prize money in the Europa League, even for the qualifying rounds. We gave up after the second round – a penny from the European federation fell into the club’s account. According to my calculations, if we reach the semi-finals of the European Cup, we would have to spend 12-15 million rubles for away and home matches. Not a single payment from the EHF will cover these costs. I can’t talk about the Champions League, I’m not taking part in it. Sport, in principle, is not profitable, no matter what one says and tries. But the worst part is…
– What’s the worst thing?
— That it has become an arena for political battles. They used to hide behind the words that sport is out of politics. But that was only until the 1960s, and then everything. Everyone wanted to show their power – the USA, China, the USSR and Russia, France, Germany … All in a row. Even the counting of medals at the Olympics in the country takes place differently, to whom it is more profitable. Well, I consider these doping stories, for which our sport has spread, exclusively political. Guys, it’s one thing when you find doping and immediately present evidence, but it’s another when it happens after three, four, five or more years. What is it if not a political order? It’s too late to drink Borjomi when the kidneys fail. After the Olympics in Sochi, they organized a clown show, they showed holes in the wall.
I look at current sport, and “I’m tormented by vague doubts”, like Ivan Vasilyevich Bunshu: does anyone see what outright bias there is in a lot of things? Some people can do one thing, and some people can’t do the same thing. At all EHF and IHF handball conferences, people who have no idea about handball have the right to vote! But they have voting cards in hand,” Trefilov told Chempionat.
At the end of February, the International and European Handball Federations announced the suspension of Russian and Belarusian teams and clubs from participating in competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
