Double Olympic silver medalist figure skater Eugenie Medvedeva explained why she decided to end her sports career.
Medvedeva is 23 years old, the athlete has not competed since the end of 2019. The figure skater won two silver medals at the 2018 Olympics – in the team tournament and in the singles competition, and also became two times world and European champion.
– Recently you posted a video on the network, where you performed a clean triple salchow in training. Do you feel that in figure skating you haven’t shown all your abilities yet?
“I didn’t want to stop competing. I have very serious back problems. Even the nerves in the back had to be removed (it’s called denervation), but that still didn’t help. At the age of 18-19 the pain was constant, at some point I could not physically pull my level. Therefore, it was decided to supplement with professional sports. I miss the competitions a lot, but life is calmer without them.
– It’s hard to believe, but recently you celebrated 20 years on the ice. It is said that figure skating never leaves an athlete’s life. Are you okay with that? Was there a moment when you thought: this is it, I’m never going back on the ice?
All failures can be overcome, believe me. Thoughts to stop everything have visited me more than once. I think every person has had a time when they gave up. At such times, it is worth looking back on your life and paying attention: your loved ones are alive, healthy, you have where to sleep and what to eat. There are a huge number of issues in the world that are more important than Evgenia Medvedeva’s sports career. And it’s a sin for me to complain about my life.
– You said that you do not consider yourself a coach, while you are actively developing in sports journalism. Who do you see yourself as?
– This is a difficult question. I like the conversational genre and I want to go in that direction. I work on the technique of speaking, my own style. There are different ideas, I will talk about them afterwards. But I don’t forget sport either. Now coaching is no longer relevant for me, but I am ready to share my experience”, quotes Medvedeva HELLO! Russia.
