The International Federation sided with the IOC on the issue of disqualification of athletes from aggressor countries.

Russian and Belarusian athletes were accepted to international competitions in another sport. The Sailing Federation (World Sailing) sided with the IOC on the return of athletes from aggressor countries.

“World Sailing welcomes the new guidance from the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommending conditions for participation for individual athletes and support personnel with Russian or Belarusian passports in international competitions in sports organized by international federations and international sports organizers events.

The World Sailing Council met this week to review the new guidance which leaves any decision to the discretion of the IFs. The Board endorsed the Basic Principles of Olympism in the Olympic Charter and recognized that these principles were guided by the IOC’s recommendation to allow the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes as independent neutral athletes.

While noting that the IOC Executive Board has not yet considered the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Board’s current view is that for the Olympic Qualifiers, the Semaine Olympique Française (SOF) in April 2024 is a target opportunity for any potential re-entry into the Olympic qualifying event. The SOF is the main regatta in the Paris 2024 qualification process.

Given the wide variety of sailing sports and the strong views of World Sailing’s national member bodies, the Board’s position is that a wider decision to return to international sailing competition will be made in consultation with the World Sailing Council at a meeting to be held on May 18, 2023. After the Board meeting, the Board intends to make a decision in accordance with the policy and rules of World Sailing.

World Sailing remains fully committed to supporting the current sailing community in Ukraine, which continues to be very difficult,” the International Sailing Federation said in a statement.
