Armenian MP Hovik Agazaryan has apologized on his social media for the incident with the burning of the national flag of Azerbaijan during the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championships in Yerevan.
On Friday, media reported that during the opening ceremony of the tournament, a fan snatched the flag of Azerbaijan from a participant in the show and set it on fire, then threw it out of the hall. The assailant was arrested at the scene, but later released by the police. On Saturday it became known that the Azerbaijani national team decided to refuse to participate in the tournament.
“I apologize to the entire international civilized community for the fact that as a citizen and parliamentarian, I have not done my utmost to completely eradicate the manifestations of savage and cannibalistic tribes in my people. I am ashamed,” Agazaryan wrote on social media, quoted by APA agency.
The European Weightlifting Championship is taking place in the capital of Armenia from April 15 to 23.
