New International Skating Union (ISU) President Jae El Kim has commented on Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva’s doping case, linking it to raising the age limit.
Valieva became an Olympic team champion at the Beijing Olympics when she was 15 years old. A day after the competition, it became known that the doping test of the Russian championship figure skater, which took place two months earlier, contained the banned substance trimetazidine. The athlete was allowed to participate in individual competitions at the Olympics, where she took fourth place, making a number of errors in the free program. Valieva’s case is currently being investigated by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA).
– The case is not over, it is ongoing. We’re not involved in that, but the biggest decision we’ve made is to raise the age limit from 15 to 17. As an organization, we are concerned about the condition of our athletes – not only physically, but also mentally. Last September, the ISU board raised this issue and the medical commission published a report that it would be good for our athletes to increase the age. The Athletes’ Commission, the athletes themselves and the coaches supported this. No, we have not received any information (regarding the “B” sample from Valieva). We will make an announcement once we get the data,” Jae Yul Kim told reporters.
