The World Federation did not give in to the IOC’s call to allow athletes from aggressor countries.

In another sport, they refused to follow the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee on the entry of athletes from aggressor countries.

The World Badminton Federation has upheld the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from participating in international tournaments under its auspices.

“This position reflects the BWF’s primary objective of safeguarding the integrity of badminton competition and ensuring the safety of all athletes.

The BWF recognizes that sport should promote peace and harmony among all people and that sport should not become a political tool for geopolitics.

In this sense, the guiding principle is that athletes should always be allowed to compete in sports regardless of their passport and regardless of any geopolitical conflict outside the control of the sports movement.

We acknowledge the recent proposed recommendation by the IOC that athletes from Russia and Belarus may compete if the IFs decide to do so. And we also recognize that peaceful and safe participation is possible in some sports.

The BWF is not convinced that there is now a satisfactory basis for lifting the disqualification of Russian and Belarusian players and officials.

The BWF continues to express its unwavering support for the people of Ukraine and the Ukrainian badminton community, and we strongly condemn the aggression against Ukraine, which is contrary to the core values of the BWF and our goal of achieving peace,” the BWF said in a statement.

Recall that earlier the IIHF reported that the Russians and Belarusians would not be returned to international hockey until the end of the war.
